The brainchild of instrument builder and jazz-fried alchemist Jay Crocker, Canadian band JOYFULTALK offer up new concepts on regionalism and conjure micro-climate trance music. Admittedly influenced by the craggy treelines and flowing rivers of Lunenburg county Nova Scotia, Crocker and multi-instrumentalist Shawn Dicey’s gnarled jamscapes render natural spaces in a hazy parallel universe.

Following the acclaimed 2015 debut album MUUIXX (on the excellent and adventurous Drip Audio), JOYFULTALK has performed across Europe & Canada at avant-garde festivals and clubs alongside such acts as Micachu & The Shapes and Holy Fuck, presenting compositions of analogue tongue that flow like wordless rivers and glitching fields of electric grass through a bric-a-brac vocabulary of handmade electronics.

“Dicey plays samples that are hooked to my system, he’s got a drum machine, Will’s got his own gear,” Crocker says, “Compared to most electronic music, this is actually played live, we're actually playing. It’s not just a backing system. Will and Dicey are able to help me play the songs or color them the right way and get the right feeling. And the songs aren’t always the same as on the record, but I

never want to do the same thing twice. For me, it’s always a fresh conversation.”  - noisey.vice.com

"An eleven track showcasing the duo’s musical trajectory, Field Theory is their second album, following in the wake of Hellas (2016). A hybrid of pop sounds, shoe gaze mountainous guitars and droning ambience, Field Theory is an oeuvre of fused genres. Co-produced by Broads and Owen Turner (who duly plays bass and horns too), this is an esoteric work for the maligned millennial. Taking inspiration from the deaths of George Romero and the imagery of old horror movies, there is an aura of the unknown at play here. Guest singer Milly Hirst’s vocals on Climbs are especially haunting, Hirst raising and closing the vocal melody with the potency of a death wish (and with good reason too. Hirst co-wrote the lyrics with James Ferguson, one half of Broads). ..Broads have plans to work on a live soundtrack for the British Film Institute – their draconic ambience could fit dark celluloid very nicely indeed."
